Pet and humans

Loving, affectionate, and dependent.

With their deep and captivating gaze, Border Collies are excellent companions. They are docile, active, and alert, and enjoy being close to their family. However, it's necessary to provide activities that fulfill their needs; otherwise, they may become frustrated and end up creating problems.

Sociable with children

Generally, they are very docile. In the case of small children, the biggest inconvenience might be the dog wanting to herd the child around the house, occasionally giving a few nips on the ankles; however, this is not an aggressive gesture, but rather a natural behavior of the breed. Avoid letting small children get too close to the dog's face; Border Collies are not dogs that usually enjoy kisses and hugs. They often try to avoid them and may occasionally give a small nip as a way of setting limits for those who want to kiss them. Try to socialize your Border Collie with children in controlled environments, with plenty of positive reinforcement and using obedience commands to keep interactions structured.

Sociable with strangers

Like good working dogs, they are always alert, which may cause them to become wary of strangers approaching. However, they are extremely intelligent, and when well socialized, they don't usually show any signs of hostility towards strangers. They tend to be a little more reserved, especially when they are adults and seniors. It's important to allow them to approach only when they feel comfortable.

Pet and other animals

Sociable with other dogs

If properly socialized, a Border Collie can live perfectly well with other dogs without constantly herding them, even though herding is a very strong trait of the breed. Early socialization will help improve their response to certain stimuli, such as movement, and consequently they will be able to relax a little more and have fun with their other furry friends.

Sociable with other species

The weakness of Border Collies is that they move very quickly, tending to want to control and herd their movements. Socializing them beforehand is important to redirect these behaviors towards other activities and allow them to coexist peacefully with other species.

Pet's daily life

He likes to play.

They love it! These dogs really enjoy playing, however, not all games will be suitable for your Border Collie. Identifying the types of games that can motivate them will make all the difference in your interaction.

It has a lot of energy.

Border Collies are dogs with almost limitless energy, stamina, and work ethic. Keeping up with the intense physical and mental stamina of a Border Collie can be exhausting, even exasperating.

Easy to educate

Border Collies stand out for learning very quickly, without needing numerous repetitions. They are very focused and attentive, and just as they used (and still use) this characteristic in herding, this concentration has also proven impressive in canine competitions and various other activities. They are excellent dogs for training in numerous disciplines; however, to manage this exceptional intelligence, the help of a qualified and experienced professional who works exclusively with positive reinforcement and never uses punishment or aversive elements with your Border Collie may be necessary.

Late too

Excessive barking is not a prominent trait in Border Collies; on the contrary, they tend to be rather quiet. They sometimes bark when they are working, such as herding someone or something, or in very specific situations, but they are not usually excessive or unnecessarily so.

It needs a lot of stimulation.

Daily exercise and walks are generally not enough to meet all the needs of these furry friends; on the contrary, investing in only one type of exercise is a misguided strategy. Border Collies need a lot of mental stimulation, which, combined with different physical exercises, will provide tranquility and relaxation for your dog.

Border Collies are a breed known for being crazy about balls, it's true! They love balls, they are absolutely fascinated by them. The toys and games that most engage Borders are those that involve movement, another example is the Frisbee. It is not recommended to play with flashlights, lights, lasers and any type of "toy" that can generate light and shadow, even if they feel very stimulated, some individuals of this breed have a strong tendency to become compulsive about lights, it is something quite serious and therefore should be avoided. Among the toy options, include bones and other rubber toys to chew on. Some Borders are very fond of tug-of-war games, so don't forget to have ropes and sticks for this type of interaction. Toys that can be stuffed, food dispensers and puzzles are great ways to keep your Border entertained, they are essential items in the basic kit of furry friends.

Explanation

Since your pet has a higher inbreeding degree than both the breed average and dogs in general, their risk is considered HIGH

Inbreeding, or consanguinity, happens when dogs with some degree of kinship are mated, producing an offspring called "inbred".

Inbreeding

The closer the relationship between the parents, the higher the inbreeding value of this offspring, which can bring several health risks, such as:

  • higher risk of developing various genetic diseases
  • higher chances of cancer, especially at younger ages (up to 6 to 8 years old)
  • predisposition to diseases related to immune system malfunction (dermatitis and food allergies, for example)
  • lower reproductive ability, with smaller litters and difficulty producing offspring
  • decreased life expectancy of your dog

Here you'll find some scientific references on the effect of excessive inbreeding:

So, if your Pet's marker shows a high inbreeding value, it means they have increased health risks.

if you're the guardian, be prepared for the risks associated with a high value. It's worth planning, for example, check-ups that start earlier in your Pet's life and happen more often, since these exams can detect a tumor early. This is especially important for breeds with a high predisposition to cancer, like the ones listed below. Talk to your veterinarian about this risk.

Based on scientific literature, here's a list of the breeds most affected by cancer, in order of prevalence (the first breeds being the most affected):

  • Flat Coated Retriever
  • Golden Retriever
  • Vizsla
  • Schanuzer Gigante
  • Boxer
  • Malamute do Alaska
  • Saluki
  • Basset Hound
  • Rhodesian Ridgeback
  • Welsh Corgi
  • Terra Nova
  • Boiadeiro Bernês
  • Staffordhsire Bull Terrier
  • Rottweiler
  • Bulldog Francês
  • Bullmastiff
  • Husky Siberiano
  • Beagle
  • Labrador
  • Poodle Standard
  • Setter Irlandês

if you're a breeder, pay close attention to your Pet's inbreeding value before breeding them. It's extremely important to lower this value in the litter. To do so, we recommend using our litter inbreeding prediction tool before choosing the pair to be mated. (Get in touch with our team to learn the pricing for this essential service, designed specifically to meet your needs efficiently.)

Keep in mind that the inbreeding value reported by the genetic test (called "genomic COI") is different from the value estimated from pedigree data!

A dog can have a low pedigree COI and still have a high genomic COI! One reason this happens is some error or fraud in the registration of an ancestor of your dog, but even in fully correct pedigrees, this possibility still exists.

The discrepancy between pedigree COI and genomic COI in correct pedigrees happens due to high inbreeding that occurred many generations ago, which remains "marked" in your dog's DNA even if no inbred matings have occurred in recent generations. In these cases, the risk associated with the elevated COI won't be as obvious.

Obesity

What is this disease?

Obesity occurs when a dog has a body condition score higher than indicated for its body type. Although it's possible to suspect your dog is obese, it's very common for owners to judge it as just "cute." However, it's important to remember that obesity is a risk factor for several diseases such as orthopedic, metabolic, and even cancer, so the pet should be evaluated by a veterinarian, and in cases where overweight/obesity is detected, it is extremely important to act to reverse this condition. The POMC gene is the main gene related to increased appetite and predisposition to obesity, since the presence of variants in this gene has already been associated with these characteristics in Labrador and Flat Coated Retriever breeds. However, as obesity is a multifactorial characteristic, the final outcome for your pet will depend on several factors. Firstly, dogs with two copies have a higher risk than those with one copy of the variant in the POMC gene. Furthermore, this is not the only gene important for this condition, so the result of this analysis may not correspond to what you observe in your dog, especially if it is not one of the two breeds mentioned above. And lastly, it is important to remember that your dog will only gain excessive weight if it consumes more calories than it expends, which means that you, as the person responsible for your pet, have control over this issue.

What are the clinical signs and when do they start?

Clinical signs / Test changes: Weight gain, overweight, high body score

Affected system: Metabolic

When they start: It generally begins in early adulthood and worsens if no intervention is made.

Is there any way to prevent or delay this disease?

Which professional should I see?

In cases of predisposition, monitoring by a veterinary nutritionist is important.

Can they be bred? What care should I take?

There are no restrictions on reproduction related to the outcome of this disease.

Paternity

DNA profile for kinship degree certificate

Your dog's DNA profile is carefully kept in our database, available for future paternity tests.

This means that, if you want to know who your pet's parents are or even prove that the offspring are theirs, we'll only need the other Pet's analysis to issue the paternity certificate.

Paternity tests in dogs can be used in the situations below:

To make sure the Pet you acquired is really the offspring of the parents the kennel reported

Breeders often provide health reports for the parents of the offspring you acquired, but to make sure those healthy parents really were your dog's parents, it's a good idea to request the paternity test.

To prove the Pet you acquired is the offspring of a champion dog of the breed

It's important to make sure you're paying extra for a real reason. When a champion's offspring reaches adulthood, they'll have a greater chance of having the physical standard you saw in the parents. Always remember the offspring will only have 50% of that great champion's genetics, so it's also important to know the other parent.

To add value to the kennel's offspring

A breeder who does paternity testing proves to the buyer that the offspring's pedigree is genuine! To do this, all breeding animals need to be tested, so the kennel allows the buyer to test the offspring with petgenoma and use the breeding animals' data for the paternity test, at no extra cost to the kennel.

For mating a female with 2 males

Mating with two males in the same fertile period is natural behavior for dogs. In purebred dogs breeding, this is quite useful since it allows the female to have offspring from two males in the same pregnancy, increasing the litter's variability. That's why paternity testing of the entire litter is required for registering and issuing the offspring's pedigree.
