Find out if your dog has a genetic predisposition to obesity

Obesity is a multifactorial disease, meaning it occurs due to the combination of several genetic variants together with the animal's lifestyle, diet, and management.

One of the genetic factors that influences the development of obesity is the POMC gene variant, which increases the pet's interest in food, and consequently is a risk factor for obesity, especially when present in two copies.

When the variant in this gene is detected, it's important to maintain a balanced diet, following the guidance of a veterinarian, preferably a nutrologist.

Encourage regular physical activity, even through play. Since these dogs tend to be more food-motivated, using treats as positive reinforcement during training will be quite effective.
